Roy Owen McKay, age 82, formerly of Powell, passed away on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, at NHC HealthCare in Oak Ridge. He was born September 2, 1943, in Nashville, Tennessee to parents Steve and Ruby McKay.
Roy was a man of many passions, with a particular love for woodworking and fishing. His workshop was a place of creativity and exacting standards, where he crafted everything from toys to clocks with a perfectionist’s touch. Despite not being a swimmer, Roy cherished his time on the water, and often spent his days at Norris Lake having fishing adventures where he would catch the daily limits of crappie, troll for walleye, or bob for bluegill. When Roy was not woodworking or fishing, you could find him with his pipe on his back porch, cheering on the Vols, making fudge and other treats with his grandchildren, or spending time with the people he loved most- his family. When not spending time with his family, Roy dedicated many years as an appraiser at TDOT, and owned his own appraisal company, Roy O McKay Appraisal Co. Roy was a beloved figure to many people, with a kind heart that was always ready to help, offer advice, or simply listen. These traits are some of the few that endeared him to many.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Robert ‘Bob’ McKay; sister Evelyn Baker; and his beloved wife, Faye McKay.
Roy leaves behind a loving family, including his sister, Linda Thompson; daughter Christine Bennett, son Randy Carroll, daughter Carrie Wehner and husband Jeff, daughter Jeanne Murphy and husband Joel. Grandchildren: Rebecca Metz, Scott Carroll and partner Heather, Ashley Marin and husband Ryan, Stephanie Candler and husband Brandon, MacKenzie Roberts, Karissa Dill, Garnett Dill, Mitch Wehner and wife Ashley, JessaAldridge and husband Grayson, Jaimi Lamb and husband Noah. Great grandchildren: Haven Carroll, Alexandra Millard and husband Brandon, Cashus Carroll and wife Emily, Lake Marler, Evan Metz, Ava Candler, Nolan Carroll, Madilyn Marin, Delilah Marin, Landon Roberts, Hudson Roberts, Remmy Wehner, and Wyatt Wehner.
