Is it a law that you must be embalmed in Tennessee?
No — this is almost always the call of the funeral service facility. Embalming is required in only a very few cases, and even then it is not the law. However, if you plan a full, traditional funeral (taking 2 days or more) you should certainly have the deceased embalmed. We make this recommendation for your safety and the safety of your guests, as well as the preservation and respect for the deceased. If the facility does embalm but does not get permission from the responsible family member then, by law, that facility is required not to charge the family for the cost of embalming.
We have no funds and no insurance or limited funds and limited insurance. How are we going to pay for their funeral cost?
Jones Mortuary has partnered with a number of financial institutions that have programs designed for these situations. In addition, we accept MasterCard, Visa, and Discover. Jones Mortuary also has a no turn away policy, meaning that we are willing to work with families on financing, when families are willing to pay a partial down payment. The family must also be willing to minimize costs, 2 or more members will be responsible contractually for the cost, and the family must have no other means of funding the services provided.

Must I buy a casket that seals if I plan to have a traditional funeral service and no embalming?
No, you do not. These standards are set by the management of the facility. There are a number of ways to prevent the deceased from omitting odor such as body bags (heavy grad materials that are very affordable and prevent odor and body fluids from escaping). These alternative options allow families to purchase caskets that do not seal and are not excessively priced. However, it is the recommendation of Jones Mortuary in these instances to have only a brief viewing before the deceased is placed in the casket. This allows the casket to remain closed during the services without inconvenience or hazard.
